Haydn's Masses have always been a source of controversy as liturgical music, even as they have enjoyed enormous popularity with singers and audiences since they were first performed in the early years of the 19th century. This Mass illustrates exactly why. The purpose of religious music, particularly Catholic religious music, is to illustrate and amplify the eternal truths of the texts. Haydn's Mass does just the opposite. Both the title of the Mass and the music--with its menacing drum beats just before the "Dona nobis pacem"--immediately root the religious experience in a specific time and set of circumstances. Musically it's all very exciting, and since we now treat these works as concert music more than anything else, there's no reason not to enjoy Haydn's impressively original and highly personal response to the text, particularly when the performance is as directly communicative as this one.

The opening work of the set is the Paukenmesse, Hob.XXII:9 from 1796 the first work Haydn composed to honour the name day (8th September) of the Princess Maria Hermenegild. The name of Paukenmesse’ (Kettledrum Mass) stems from the employment of timpani in the Agnus Dei; evocative of hearing the advance of the enemy. At the time of composition the French armies had occupied the state of Styria in southeast Austria.

This is the third disc of Haydn’s sacred music from Bruno Weil and his team. An inspired feature of the series has been its coupling of the grander Masses with a variety of little-known gems. Last year’s Heiligmesse recording also included the thrilling motet ‘Insanae et vanae curae’; this new CD pairs spirited, sensitive versions of the 1796 Missa in tempore belli (Mass in Time of War) and the 1771 Salve regina with a beautiful early motet, ‘O coelitum beati’, its exquisitely tender soprano aria recalling the lovely Ave regina from the first disc of the series.
The Missa in tempore belli (nicknamed ‘Paukenmesse’) was the second of the six late Masses that are among the crowning glories of Haydn’s career. Its title refers to Austria’s calamitous war with Napoleon and a sense of dread pervades the music: in the hushed gravity of the Gloria and Credo Adagios, in the anxious tread of the Benedictus, most of all in the famous Agnus Dei, with its chilling kettle-drum solos and blazing martial climax.
This is magnificent music, magnificently played.

Weil tends to hurry a little in places, but at least he does not insist on using boy soloists from the choir, as he did on his earlier disc of the Heiligmesse.
He achieves a generally buoyant performance and both the other soloists, soprano Ann Monoyios and tenor Joerg Hering, are equal to their colleagues.
